Orientation
Volunteers and parents gather to hear the rundown of the training year. Many board members come to talk about fundraising, paperwork, training, and projects.
Paperwork
Our paperwork coordinator collects different items at the retreat. She brought her helper today!
Routes
Volunteers are organized into "routes" and are assigned a "route leader", similar to how their summer route will be assigned a field supervisor. The route leader gets to know their volunteers and conducts routine volunteer evaluations to prepare volunteers for their summer experience.
Dinámicas
Volunteers participate in "dinámicas", icebreaker games, to get to know each other, to practice Spanish, and to learn games that will be useful in their communities during the summer.
Letter Workshop
Each volunteer sent out at least 100 letters! We get together to assemble the packets to send out.
Trust
Volunteers play a trust game in Spanish to practice language skills and to learn games that they can use during the summer in their communities. In this game, they have to lead their blind-folded partner through a "mine field".
More dinámicas
Volunteers get out their wiggles between training activities while learning useful games.
The Hats We Wear
Volunteers learn about their different roles during the summer: motivator, leader, role model, teacher, etc. They make hats to represent and talk about these different roles.
Picking a project
Veteran Volunteers share stories, artifacts, and photos about their summer experiences so current trainees can pick which projects they're interested in.
Web of Stakeholders (video)
Watch how we link volunteers to all the other players in the great web of AMIGOS stakeholders.
Human Knot - El nudo humano (video)
Watch how AMIGOS volunteers practice Spanish while learning games they can use during their summer.
Veteran Volunteer Trainers (video)
Watch how AMIGOS veteran volunteer "trainers" lead an activity to teach about the AMIGOS mission and vision.
Virtual Community - Mayor
Local Spanish speakers come to help prepare volunteers for house-to-house visits and also visits to the mayor's office, school, church, store, etc. Each person has a role and a station that volunteers rotate around to, speaking Spanish.
Virtual Community - trouble!
Some virtual community members have a role that has them try to get AMIGOS vols to break rules. Will they fall into the trap with this womanizer?
Standards of Conduct
Volunteers must follow the standards of conduct during all trainings (as applicable) and during the summer.
Planning Camps and Charlas
Volunteers use their AMIGOS resources (handbooks) to create plans for camps and charlas, then they practice giving the charla (short and informal lessons) in Spanish to the group.
